One way to find books that are appropriate for your child is through the use of our Destiny system. This link will take you to our school library catalog where you can search for books a variety of ways. If your student is in 1st or 2nd grade, you will select "Fountas and Pinnell" from the "Reading Programs" box, then enter the reading levels by letter. You will choose 1 level below their independent level as the "from" box and 1-2 levels above their reading level for the "to" box. If your student is in 3rd or 4th grade, you will select "lexile" from the "Reading Programs" box and enter their lexile reading range as the "from" and "to" levels. It is possible to further refine your search by adjusting the other limiters. If school is not currently in session, you can print the list to take to the public library and have them order specific books if they aren't readily available.

The Reading Triangle
The Reading Triangle is how I talk to the students about self-monitoring their reading. The brain, ear, and eye make a triangle that needs to be completely engaged to read. The brain answers the question, "Does it make sense?" The ear asks, "Does it sound right? Can we talk like that in the English language?" The eye checks to make sure that the word looks like the letters our mouths are saying. When we make a mistake it is because we have failed to use one of the points on our triangle. It is important to talk about mistakes with the students because by identifying them, they can work toward eliminating them. We usually find that there is one area that tends to be left out most often, but which area that is completely depends on the reader.
